Valid Passport

Our camp is in Namibia, so if you’re coming from outside the country, you’ll need a valid passport for international travel. A passport, issued by a national government, serves as proof of identity and nationality for the holder.

FOR RSA PASSPORT:

  • To obtain a passport, you must possess a South African identity document or, if you’re a minor, a birth certificate.
  • Minors under 18 years) must have their own passports, which are valid for 5 years rather than the standard 10 years for adults.
  • Emergency and temporary passports are no longer issued by the Department of Home Affairs.
  • When applying for a passport for a minor, both parents must endorse the application and present their identity documents. If one parent is unavailable or resides in a different location, one parent can apply with the minor while the other can confirm the application at a different office.
  • When traveling to Namibia, ensure there’s at least one blank page in your passport. For travel from Namibia to South Africa, you’ll need two blank pages.

DUAL CITIZENSHIP:

South Africans holding dual citizenship are required to depart and return to South Africa using a valid South African passport.

Non-South Africans holding permanent residency in South Africa must either depart and return using a valid South African passport or possess a permanent residency stamp in their non-South African passport.

Both South Africans with dual citizenship and non-South Africans residing in South Africa must ensure that all necessary documentation, including those mentioned above, is in order for both departure from and re-entry into South Africa.

APPLICATION:

Application for a passport takes 3 – 6 weeks.
If a minor who is applying for a passport is 16 years or older the minor must be in possession of an identity document; an additional 6 – 12 weeks must therefore be factored in if applying for an identity document first.

When applying for a passport for a minor both parents must endorse the application and need to present their identity documents.
In the case of one parent being unavailable or living in another city/town, one parent can make the passport application with the minor. The other parent can confirm the application at a different office, informing the official at which office the original application was made.

Copies of documents are accepted but may only be certified by a commissioner of oaths. The date stamp on copies and affidavits must be within 3 months of the date of return to South Africa. All copies must be on A4 paper; no blank paper may be cut off.
